Learning 4 Life

Intent:

At Bierton CE Combined School, we aim to equip our pupils with the skills required to be active and responsible citizens, who know how to respect others and the environment, as well as learn how to show respect for themselves. We don’t take for granted that children know how to behave appropriately in a range of situations. Therefore, we aim to teach them the knowledge, skills and attitudes that they need to effectively navigate the complexities of life in the 21st Century.

We want our children to also understand how to look after their mental health and the value of this. Moreover, we ensure that our curriculum is inclusive and takes our whole school community into account, reflecting diversity. We ensure our children’s social and emotional needs are met throughout our curriculum.

Implementation:

Our behaviour curriculum is called, ‘Learning 4 Life’. We endeavour to equip our children with skills for life.

We use a clear and progressive curriculum, starting right down in our Nursery. Our curriculum is split into 6 themes: belonging, tolerance, growth mindset, mental health and wellbeing and reflections. In each year group, throughout the school, the children  revisit a theme they have met before, however the content varies.

Throughout the curriculum, we focus on teaching the children: how they can ensure they belong within a community; how to show respect to ourselves and others; the importance of mental health and wellbeing; how to develop resilience and a can-do attitude; and how we are always learning and therefore how we can reflect on ourselves.

Our Learning 4 Life curriculum is taught alongside our PSHCE curriculum. Our lessons are delivered in a variety of ways; for example: through designing artwork, having debates, writing, discussions. We also ensure there are meaningful opportunities for cross-curricular learning.

Impact:

We are confident that the impact of our Learning 4 Life curriculum will ensure that:

- Pupils are well-prepared for the next stage in their education and, in fact, their lives

- Pupils understand and respect differences between themselves and others

- Pupils understand the importance of looking after their mental health and knowing where and when to seek help if needed

- Pupils feel like they are a part of their community, both inside and outside of school

- Pupils will know how to form happy and healthy relationships with others

- Pupils have the knowledge, skills and attributes to live happy, healthy and fulfilled lives

- Pupils are resilient and know what to do when faced with challenges
