PSCHE

Intent

At Bierton Church of England Combined School, we aim to provide high quality PSCHE education which develops children as citizens who make a difference to themselves, their peers and their community.  We aim to give children the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that they need to effectively navigate the complexities of life in the 21st Century.

Our curriculum covers key areas which will support children to make informed choices now and in the future around their health, safety, wellbeing, relationships and financial matters.  It will also support them in becoming confident individuals and active members of society.   The PSCHE curriculum contributes to their personal development as set out in the Ofsted Inspection Framework and promotes the four fundamental British values which reflect life in modern Britain: democracy; rule of law; respect and tolerance and individual liberty.

We endeavour to create an inclusive learning environment where the social, emotional, and spiritual needs of children are met through our school community. Our PSCHE provision has been designed to be age appropriate, whilst being sensitive to the needs of our whole school community.  We reflect diversity within our curriculum to ensure that no pupil feels excluded and teach pupils to understand, respect and celebrate difference and challenge stigma.

Implementation

We use a clear and comprehensive scheme of work in line with the National Curriculum.  It is planned for, and covered in full within the EYFS, KS1 and KS2 school curriculum.  We follow the Kapow Primary scheme which is a whole school approach that consists of three areas of learning in EYFS: Reception (to match the EYFS personal, social and emotional development prime area) and five areas of learning across Key Stages 1 and 2.

EYFS Key Stage 1 and 2

Self-regulation

 Building relationships

 Managing self

Families and relationships

 Health and wellbeing

 Safety and the changing body

Citizenship

Economic wellbeing

Each area is revisited to allow children to build on prior learning. The lessons also provide a progressive programme. The lessons are based upon the statutory requirements for Relationships and Health Education. Sex education has been included in line with the DfE recommendations and is covered in Year 6 of our scheme. The scheme supports the requirements of the Equality Act through direct teaching.

A range of teaching and learning activities are used to ensure that all children can access learning and make progress. There are meaningful opportunities for cross-curricular learning, in particular with Computing for online safety and Science for growing, nutrition, teeth, diet and lifestyle.

Impact

We are confident that the impact of this comprehensive and tailored PSCHE programme will ensure that;

  •  PSHE provision provides pupils with well-chosen opportunities and contexts to explore and embed new knowledge that can be used confidently in real life situations.
  • Pupils are able to form healthy, happy relationships with other children and adults and recognise the features of unhealthy relationships and have strategies to challenge negative behaviour of others and seek help when need

  • Pupils know how and when to ask for help and where to access support.

  • Pupils are well-informed and recognise the risks they may encounter both on and offline and are able to make safe choices.

  • Pupils are enabled to take responsibility for their actions and understand the implications and consequences of their own decisions.

  • Pupils are well-prepared for the next steps of their lives

  • Pupils have the knowledge, skills and attributes to live healthy, happy lives.

  • Pupils understand and respect differences between themselves and others.

By the time children leave Bierton CE Combined School they will have met the objectives set out within the Relationships and Health Education statutory guidance and can utilise their learning within their daily lives; from dealing with friendship issues to resilience to making healthy choices and knowing where and how to get help when needed.
