Curriculum Intent, Implementation and Impact

At Bierton CE Combined School and Nursery, we have designed an ambitious curriculum which is built upon our vision to provide our children with the best educational start in life. Our curriculum provides children with opportunities that equip them with the knowledge, skills and learning behaviours which allows their light to shine and continue to shine once they have left our school.

Background

The National Curriculum is a set of subjects and standards used by primary schools so children learn the same things. It covers what subjects are taught and the standards children should reach in each subject. This is a statutory document that all schools must follow. Schools have the autonomy to decide on how this content is delivered and what approach we would take to ensure that our curriculum is bespoke to the needs of our children and community.

Intent

It is our intent that our children develop physically, emotionally, socially, verbally and cognitively in an inclusive environment which values all cultures, communities and people. At the heart of our school are a set of core values: Love, Honesty, Co-operation, Responsibility and Respect. These values underpin everything that we do and provide the vehicle for delivering an ambitious and aspirational curriculum. At Bierton, our curriculum has been designed with the children, the communities and the location in mind. The curriculum design is progressive, continuous and sequential, including the reflections of governors, teachers, parents and children. Our sequential curriculum is designed to teach the children knowledge about the world and enables our pupils to be independent, resilient and creative thinkers, who are prepared for the next stage in their learning journey. We support children in building their self-esteem and confidence and allow them to realise their potential and ‘find their light’, linked to our whole school vision.

Implementation – How do we achieve this?

Implementation describes the way in which we deliver our curriculum each day. Our curriculum has been carefully designed to promote self-confidence and a positive attitude to learning in all children, regardless of their individual background. We have ensured it is progressive and caters for children from a variety of different starting points building upon what the children can already do and what they already know. Tailored and targeted support is put in place for those children who may need it and this is recognised and implemented as early as possible to ensure children make maximum progress.

Each subject has its own intent and clear pedagogy with regular training provided to ensure that all staff have the relevant subject knowledge and are confident to deliver high quality teaching and learning across the curriculum. Throughout the year, subject leaders monitor the impact of their subject to ensure the intent and implementation enables our children to ‘shine’.

Impact – What difference does the curriculum make to our children?

At Bierton CE Combined School and Nursery, pupils leave our setting with a secure understanding of the academic content and with the awareness of how to be socially, morally, spiritually and culturally responsible; how to make positive contributions to the local community and how to endeavour to allow their light to shine and continue to shine brightly as they embark on their next journey. We aim for all of our children to leave Bierton, respectful, responsible, ambitious and with a thirst for life and all it has to offer. The impact of our curriculum is also evaluated through end of year assessments and Government tests; through Governor meetings and visits; trips and visits, and through our own monitoring of teaching, learning and pupil voice.

Our aim is to provide a broad and balanced curriculum which challenges children to aim high, find their ‘sparkle’, achieve success and shine.

Our curriculum provides children with experiences that progress their knowledge and skills across all subjects. Developing a Growth mindset, providing children with a voice and ensuring it is relevant to our community will always be at the heart of our curriculum. Flowing throughout our curriculum are enriching opportunities which provide our children with new experiences to ensure maximum engagement is maintained. We firmly believe that our curriculum ensures children aim high, achieve success, find their sparkle and shine.
